About Sheriff Matt Phillips

On January 3 rd , 2020, Sheriff Matt Phillips was sworn in as the 32nd Sheriff of Clatsop County. He began his career in law enforcement on November 19, 2001 when he was hired as a deputy in the patrol division with Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office. Over the course of the last eighteen years, he has shown his dedication and advanced through the ranks, most recently as the jail commander. Sheriff Phillips was recognized by the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association as “Jail Commander of the Year,” in 2018. During his tenure with the Sheriff’s Office, he also held many specialty assignments such as a narcotics K9 handler, marine patrol deputy, and search and rescue coordinator.

Matt is currently working on finishing his Masters of Criminal Justice degree from Western Oregon University where he has completed all coursework with a 4.0 GPA. He is working on his exit requirement by finishing a professional paper detailing the development, implementation and success of the Pretrial Release Program. He currently holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology from Oregon State University.

Sheriff Phillips was born and raised in Clatsop County. He has the support of his wife, Bree, their son, Jack, and daughter, Jane. The Phillips family has made this area their home and are involved in the community through many avenues including 4-H with their children. He has successfully developed strong working relationships with our partners in the community and will continue to serve the citizens of this county with pride.

Matt remains dedicated by keeping himself trained and informed. His training has included International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute, Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Command College, Oregon Executive Development Institute, Oregon Police Corps Academy, and countless hours of assorted training in the different divisions and disciplines within the sheriff’s office.
