Sheriff Todd McKinley

Sheriff McKinley was elected by a significant majority to serve the people of Grant County in November of 2020 and was sworn into office on January 4th, 2021.

Sheriff McKinley began his law enforcement career in Grant County in 1999 as a reserve deputy for Sheriff Fred Reusser. After Sheriff Reusser passed away while still in office in the fall of 2000, and after Sheriff Palmer was appointed to finish this term, he then worked as a reserve deputy for Sheriff Palmer. In April of 2001, Todd was hired as a school resource officer and served in that capacity until 2004.

On August 21st of 2001, a gunman fired on then Deputy McKinley, a trooper, and a corrections deputy, just four days after his graduation from the Academy. Todd was given an OSSA Distinguished Action award as a result of this incident.

In 2009, he was promoted to undersheriff, where he served in that capacity until December of 2015. Then, he was hired as the director of Community Corrections and obtained his probation officer certification.

Sheriff McKinley has served as a volunteer firefighter for the Mt. Vernon Rural Fire Department for over 32 years and is a past board member of the John Day Rural Fire Department. He serves on the Child Fatality Review Board, LPSSC, and is a board member for Community Counseling Solutions.

During his tenure with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff McKinley has been recognized for his work with Search and Rescue, as the first Responder of the Year in 2003, and for a Distinguished Action Award in 2007 in response to wildfires.

During the destructive wildfires of 2015, then Undersheriff McKinley coordinated the evacuation effort that resulted in no lives being lost.

Sheriff McKinley enjoys the outdoors; he likes to hunt and spend time in the beautiful Blue Mountains.

Sheriff McKinley married his wife Misty in 1994. Together, they have seven children and two grandchildren.
