Summer, 2010 -- The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office stepped up its efforts to become more active in the area of sustainability. An eight person Sustainability Team was established to look at ways the agency could become more environmentally responsible. The team made a commitment to identify actions that would reduce the significant amount of solid waste and potential recyclables.

The team identified specific areas that would divert solid waste and potential recyclables from the waste stream, helping to contribute to the Multnomah County's 2010 goal that 65% of waste be recycled. One of the first steps was to establish a correctional kitchen compost collection program. This program has been very successful for over a year. In 2009, Inverness Jail collected 75,000 lbs of compost.

The next program was the discontinuation of the use of styrofoam cups in the two facility's lunchrooms. Statistics indicated approximately 530,000 styrofoam cups were being used annually. Inverness Jail took the first step and eliminated the cups. Inverness Jail documented an $8,000.00 savings in addition to the environmental benefits. The Justice Center will discontinue the use of styrofoam this year. The team is in constant search for ways of being more sustainable such as investigating the possibility of solar hot water collectors for the roof of the Inverness facility.

A valuable lesson the Sustainability Team learned was the most important actions an agency can do, is the establishment of an educational program that enlightens and empowers all staff, individually and collectively to assist in meeting the agencies sustainable goals.
