Sheriff Blanton has been in law enforcement in Oregon for almost 30 years. Most recently, he served as Undersheriff of Deschutes County. He and his wife of 31 years have lived in Bend all their lives. They have two sons, Chad, a fireman paramedic for the City of Portland, and Shawn, is employed at Hooker Creek Equipment Company in Bend.

Sheriff Blanton is an active member of the community, participating in Greater Bend Rotary, the Bend Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Council, Leadership Bend Graduate of Class #2. In addition, Larry serves on many boards including: Oregon Accreditation Alliance and Central Oregon Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation.

Summer, 2010 -- On May 6th, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office received a nomination for recertification from the Oregon Accreditation Alliance. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office was first certified on June 1, 2004. In September 2007, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office was the first agency to receive recertification under the new Oregon Accreditation Alliance requirements.

Sheriff Blanton recommended to the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners and to the Deschutes County Budget Committee, a tax reduction of 3 cents for Law Enforcement District 1. This temporary reduction would take District 1 from 95 cents to 92 cents per $1,000 in assessed value for FY 2010/11.

Beginning in FY 2011/12, this temporary tax cut may or may not be raised back to the current rate of 95 cents. Operational expenses at that time will need to be examined. Sheriff Blanton stated in a press release, "You have our commitment that we will continue to do everything possible to keep taxes down. As your Sheriff, I am proud of the men and women of the Sheriff's Office and their commitment to use every penny wisely."
