Sheriff Bishop was born in Roseburg (1962) and raised in Coquille Oregon. After Graduating from high school, he moved to Arizona and attended school.

He started my professional career in the corporate world as the North American Supervisor for Yokohama Tire Corporation in their Mining Division. In 1988 he applied for a law enforcement position in Oregon and was accepted.

In the 21 years of Law Enforcement, Sheriff Bishop has served as a patrol officer, detective, assistant chief of police, and now Sherriff. He has led numerous major investigations in narcotics, sexual assaults, major money laundering, and capital murder cases. He also assisted in investigations with a team at the California's Pelican Bay State Prison. These investigations included narcotic and homicide investigations, working closely with the Department of Justice, and numerous Federal Agencies.

Sheriff Bishop has taught investigation, interviewing techniques, and other classes for the local college and attended specialized training from the Israeli Mossad and Secret Service in specialized areas of investigations.

He was awarded the Marine Corps "Distinguished Service Award" and other awards and holds an Executive Certificate from DPSST.

Sheriff Bishop is married and has three children. He has coached football for the past 25 years and is currently coaching at the local high school.

He comes from a law enforcement background as my wife leads the Parole and Probation Division for the county and his father in-law retired as a lieutenant from the Inyo County Sheriff?s office in California where he helped in the Charlie Manson case.

While at times it has been difficult, he enjoys his career in Law Enforcement and would not trade the experiences and friendships along the way for any other profession.

OREGON SHERIFF Magazine News

Summer, 2010 -- Our new year has brought its challenges early. The 4-year-old Zoey Dorsey search, on March 17th, was a heart wrenching and extremely emotional event that had the entire Brookings community's attention. We had over 100 searchers from seven sheriff's offices with more on the way, five aircraft, and over 200 hundred civilian volunteers from the community. The logistics not only tested this Sheriff's Office but the entire CORSAR (California, Oregon, Regional Search and Rescue) command structure. Fortunately, Zoey was found and has completely recovered. I want to thank Robert and Peggy Crump who found Zoey, and all of the volunteers who put their lives on hold to help us bring this girl home. The CORSAR model showed what it is capable of and showed that by sharing resources we increase the chance of successful search and rescue missions. Curry County SAR has already conducted 13 missions in three months.

The other eight divisions of the Sheriff's Office have also been busy in 2010. We are currently in budget workshops for Curry County and things do not look promising. We may lose many hard working, dedicated professionals.

As we head into summer, the Sheriff's Office asks that you be careful with your outdoor activities. In Curry County, as you enjoy all of the six rivers or ocean waters, please be sure to wear your life vests when required. If you are hiking into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, make sure all of your equipment is working properly. Have a safe and fun summer.
